What Is a Sasaeng Fan? Birthday Cafés and the Limits of Public Celebration

A birthday café connects a public fan celebration with an ordinary drink purchase.

A fan-organized birthday café makes K-pop enthusiasm visible through an ordinary food business: people meet, buy a drink and enjoy a temporary display. Its public setting is the useful starting point for distinguishing a celebration from pursuit of somebody’s private life.

Sasaeng refers to intrusive fans associated with pursuit of an entertainer’s private life. A 2018 Korea Times report explains the term through behavior such as following stars and waiting outside their homes. This article uses that definition, rather than the report’s historical discussion of legal penalties as current law.[1]

The Gunil headline needs a narrower answer than a rumor thread provides. On August 13, 2026, JYP announced his withdrawal from Xdinary Heroes and termination of his exclusive contract, as reproduced by Soompi. That announcement does not establish every claim circulating about the people involved.[2]

The account was subsequently disputed. An August 21 Korea Times report says Gunil’s representative denied that he voluntarily left or consented to termination and challenged its grounds. The report also says the agency had not disclosed specific details. A disputed departure should not be presented as a proven, single-cause story about a sasaeng fan.[3]

What a birthday café actually offers

In March 2023, The Korea Times described fans renting and decorating cafés for an idol’s birthday and interviewed organizers. That is evidence of a particular kind of fan event. It does not mean every café has such a program or that the performer attends.[4]

For a visitor, separate the café’s food service from the organizer’s celebration. The venue prepares and sells the drink or dessert; an organizer may arrange decorations and event materials. The poster and the café can explain how those parts fit together.

A photograph of a past display is not an opening announcement. Find the specific event’s published dates, location and operating arrangements. Temporary decorations can disappear while the café continues its ordinary business.

Choose the visit for what is publicly offered: a drink, a decorated space and time with other fans. A birthday date or fan-made image does not promise a celebrity appearance, an official endorsement or access to a private schedule.

Order the food, then understand the event extras

Read the actual menu before deciding what to buy. A coffee, a tea and a dessert can be separate purchases even when they appear together in an event photograph. Ask which items are available during the event and which belong to the regular menu.

An event package may have its own conditions. Ask what the listed purchase includes, whether a particular item is required and whether any extras remain available. Treat the published arrangement as specific to that event rather than a national birthday-café rule.

It is useful to distinguish a reusable object from packaging. If there is a decorated cup sleeve, find out whether it accompanies a drink and how to collect it. A sleeve pictured online is not a promise that every visitor will receive one.

Keep the drink choice personal. Hot or cold, coffee or non-coffee, and a separate dessert are practical menu decisions. An idol’s image beside the counter does not establish that the menu reproduces that person’s favorite order.

Make room for an ordinary café visit

A small café still has a counter, tables and people carrying drinks. Observe its instructions for ordering, waiting and seating. A popular display does not change the need to leave a clear route between the entrance and the service area.

Ask before moving decorations for a photograph. An arrangement may belong to the organizer, while the table is part of the café’s service. Taking a picture from the available position is often simpler than rearranging an occupied space.

Decide whether you want to sit down or take your drink away. That affects the order, the time needed and how easily you can carry any event materials. The café’s seating policy matters more than assumptions drawn from another event.

If you visit with friends, place a manageable order and agree where to wait. A few people can enjoy the same celebration while choosing different drinks. Buying an item you actually want keeps the food business central to the outing.

Keep public celebration separate from private pursuit

An advertised fan event offers a destination with publicly stated visiting arrangements. A guessed home, hotel or unannounced stop has no equivalent invitation. The distinction is access granted by the venue, rather than the intensity of somebody’s enthusiasm.

Use the organizer’s public announcement for event information and the venue for food-service questions. Neither needs to provide a performer’s whereabouts. A birthday café can be a complete celebration without any connection to the artist’s movements that day.

When photographing the space, keep other customers’ faces and conversations out of the frame where possible. A close view of your drink, dessert or permitted display usually records the visit without turning unrelated people into its subject.

Do not use a public celebration to validate private allegations. A café display shows what fans chose to celebrate; it supplies no evidence about a performer’s relationship, conduct or contract. The Gunil reports and a birthday-café visit answer different questions.

Enjoy the drink as part of the occasion

Notice what you ordered before treating the cup only as a souvenir. The temperature, sweetness and coffee or tea character belong to the drink itself. A themed setting can add meaning without replacing the ordinary pleasure of a well-chosen refreshment.

If a dessert is offered, check its portion and whether you want to share it. A small celebration can be one drink and one slice rather than every item on display. The particular café’s serving format determines what that order contains.

Keep event materials separate from the food you are carrying. A spill can spoil both the drink and a paper sleeve. Ask the staff how to pack the purchase when you intend to travel with it instead of balancing several loose items.

The strongest reason to visit is a clear public occasion you can actually enjoy. Confirm the event, order something appealing, follow the venue’s arrangements and leave with a memory of the place. That is a useful food experience in its own right.

Choose a drink and dessert you actually want, then enjoy the café’s setting.
